Some thoughts on web design taken from:
Fancy graphics, rotating banners, background music, video, web-cams they will all make website design pretty and eye-catching. However they will also make your website slow to load and, more often than not, difficult to navigate. If you want to incorporate the latest technology into your site then ask yourself this question first. What is it that people visit my website for? If indeed it is to sample MP3 files or download your free website design graphics then fine. However the majority of people surfing the web are doing so for the written word. In short they are looking for information. And not just any information. They want specific information for a specific purpose. They want that information now, and they also want it for free. After all that's what your here for right? Quite simply knowledge. This is what the whole Internet revolves around. However this simple basic fact is so often ignored in these days of e-commerce and 'instant sites'. People are being duped into believing that they only have to put up a list of their wares together with some electronic means of ordering on-line, get submitted to all the search engines and then sit back and watch those profits come rolling in. Does it work? Try it and see. You may even be reading this because you personally tried this 'formula for success' and were disillusioned with the results. So you came seeking knowledge on what was wrong and what you could do to rectify the situation. So what does work? How do you build a large clientèle of regular visitors who will buy the product/services you have to offer? The number one 'secret' of online success is content, plenty of free, useful content that's relevant to your visitors. Lets illustrate this with an example. Lets say your site is dedicated to tropical fish. OK, now ask yourself what would be useful to your visitors apart from your range of fish foods and aquatic plants etc. How about an on-line chart with pictures and descriptions of the various fish people keep and their individual pros and cons. Then there's tips and tricks on managing aquariums. What about a guide on keeping your fish healthy. Are you getting the idea? Build up a collection of useful content that will bring people back. Don't worry if you only have a few articles to start with. A web site design should be organic. By this I mean it should grow and mature over time by being regularly updated, expanded and developed. This keeps the site fresh and encourages further visits. An opportunity to display your wares That's all very well but how will that help me sell my products/services? I hear what your saying and it's a very good question. And here's the answer... Once you have developed some relevant content you can integrate it with your products and services. Looking back at our fishy example how about including in your 'keeping fish healthy' article details on tropical fish diseases and how to recognise the early symptoms. You could then, quite naturally, combine this information with a list of treatments you sell. For example:- If your fish does this... or looks like this... then it has this... We have found that the best way to cure it is with this... You can order some online now from here... Include links within your article to your ordering page and to other related products that your visitor might find useful. Remember this is not meant to replace your catalogue or online store. Rather it is to give your site some substance. A free resource that will encourage people to stop by often giving you an increased chance to build a relationship and improve your sales. Keep your content fresh and topical. If you introduce a new range of products or services then create appropriate content to support it. The key word here is support. Don't go overboard. Your content should not be there just as a vehicle to push your products. This gives the wrong impression and can irritate or even alienate your visitors. Remember you want your visitors to return time and time again. There is very little chance that they will purchase anything until they have visited your site at least 3 or 4 times. So provide valuable, free content that is regularly updated and expanded to get them coming back again...and again...and again. Don't forget that your web sites content says far more about you than any of your products ever could, and your website design should reflect this.
